The Governor’s Trail is 10 miles of trail but the outer loop is virtually not used today because on the outer 5 mile loop there is a large creek to cross and a swamp. Scouts must leave Boy Scout property, hike for a mile on a two lane highway with no shoulder and cars traveling at 60 miles an hour, then re-enter the Scout property, to avoid the swamp and large creek crossing.
Mikanakawa Lodge worked on a major conservation project to provide a safe hiking trail at Clements Scout Ranch. The Lodge worked six weekends to bring the Governor’s Trail at Clements Scout Ranch inside the fence to stay on Boy Scout property by clearing new trails, building a 50 foot bridge with (2ea) 2400 lb steel beams and concrete abutments across a 25 foot creek, and re-routing approx. 1 mile of trail through a swampy area. The Lodge also created new Philmont style campsites along the trail with permanent fire rings, and a bear cable for practicing hanging smellables.
